Boston is home to countless bars, but only one where everybody knows your name. For eleven seasons on "Cheers," millions of viewers descended those familiar steps into a basement bar that felt like home. So where exactly was this beloved watering hole supposed to be located?

The answer is: Beacon Street
Sam Malone served drinks at 112½ Beacon Street, a basement bar squeezed between the townhouses of Boston's old money elite. The show never made a big deal about its address - it was just there, like Norm's tab or Cliff's postal uniform, another small detail in a bar where everybody knows your name.
The real inspiration sits at 84 Beacon Street, where the Bull & Finch Pub caught the eye of producers searching for their show's exterior shot. Those stone steps leading down to a basement door felt right - a hideaway beneath Boston's stuffiest street, where regular folks could escape their regular lives.
While the interior scenes were filmed on a Hollywood soundstage, that quick exterior shot of the Bull & Finch opened every episode. These days, the bar calls itself Cheers and serves drinks to tourists hunting for a piece of TV history. The basement looks nothing like the show's set, but upstairs, they went ahead and built a replica of the studio. You might not be able to visit 112½ Beacon Street and have a drink with Norm Peterson, but hey, 84 Beacon Street wants to know your name.
