What is the record for the longest gap between consecutive Oscar nominations?

Most actors would be thrilled with one Oscar nomination. Judd Hirsch got two, separated by enough time for an entire generation to be born, grow up, and have kids of their own. What is the record for the longest gap between consecutive Oscar nominations?
▼
Correct Answer: 42 years
(Source)Judd Hirsch's first nomination was so long ago that MTV hadn't even aired its first music video yet. He played a psychiatrist in "Ordinary People," and even though he didn't win, he went back to winning Emmys for "Taxi." Forty-two years later, Steven Spielberg cast him as Uncle Boris in "The Fabelmans" and his 10 minutes of screen time were enough to earn him a second nomination. At 87, he broke Henry Fonda's 41-year record exactly 41 years after Fonda set it. He didn't win this time either, but his career outlasted MTV's "Music Television" tagline.
