But the height of the show’s brilliance, and its popularity, may have been after the show’s third-season finale, "A House Divided", when the villainous J.R. Ewing is shot by a mysterious figure — leaving the American viewing public to ponder and debate who did it.
A summer-long marketing campaign kept the entire country on the hook, and it wasn’t until the fourth episode of the fourth season that we finally found out who the attempted murderer really was, with 83 million viewers tuning in to find out.
