When was the first time beer was sold in a can?
The story of beer is one of endless human innovation. We started with gruel, moved to barley, figured out how to adjust colors and flavors and aromas, went from brewing in small batches at home to giant steel brewing vats — and we’re still at it.
But one of the biggest innovations in producing and selling beer came in the form of a can. The simple step to put beer in brown bottles, which meant less sunlight could get through to degrade the flavor, was made in 1912 by the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company.
Then came the idea to put beer in cans. Cans don’t just restrict light, they keep it out altogether. They’re also lighter, easier to ship, and easier for consumers to recycle or dispose of. It was yet another technological leap for the industry — but when did brewers finally start using this innovation?
