Who was the first Robin in comic book history?

When someone says, "You're like the Robin to my Batman," you should run.

That's because things don't typically turn out that well for Batman's perennial kid sidekicks. But in return for all that sacrifice, Robin is the prototypical sidekick and the one who honestly put sidekicks in general on the map.

Robin first appeared in 1940, in Detective Comics #38. With Batman being such an emo loner, he needed someone he could talk to, according to creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger.

Since then there have been countless iterations with different names across print, TV, and film — but who was the first?

The answer is: Dick Grayson. We’ll give Dick Grayson a pass since he was the first Robin, but after a point you have to wonder why anyone would want to take the role? Sure, Dick made it out alright and eventually went on to be Nightwing, but ended up dying in a prison called the Murder Machine. Jason Todd was brutalized by the Joker, and so on. Even Damian Wayne, Bruce’s own son, bit the dust as Robin. Honestly, as cool as it might sound to work with Batman, it’s basically a death sentence. Source
