It’s kind of unbelievable that we’re coming up on 50 years of "Jaws" being in the world, and Steven Spielberg is still out there directing movies. Of course, when it’s all said and done, his 1975 breakthrough hit will still be considered one of his greatest films.
The tale of the great white shark terrorizing the quaint seaside town of Amity Island only works thanks to protagonist Martin Brody, the new chief of police. Brilliantly portrayed by Roy Scheider in what might be his most famous role, it's Brody who initially suspects a shark and takes the threat seriously — and finally takes down the monster in an epic battle.
But Scheider wasn't the first choice for this iconic part. Who was initially cast as Chief Brody in "Jaws"?

The answer is: Robert Duval. It’s hard to imagine Chief Brody being played by anyone but Roy Scheider, but the role was actually initially offered to Robert Duval. Duval turned it down because apparently the only role for the film he was interested in was the eccentric shark-hunting Quint.Source
