There are traces of frozen desserts going back as far back as 500 BC, but the ability to freeze dairy is still a relatively newer innovation. It wasn’t until the late 1600s that Europeans started figuring out how to make frozen desserts with cream and sorbets.
But I’m glad they did. There is nothing better than a cold scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day. Or on a cold winter’s day. Or for breakfast. There really are no bad times to enjoy this globally beloved dessert.
While in terms of sheer volume there are a few places that consume a lot of the cold stuff, you can get a sense for who really loves ice cream by drilling down to a per capita level. When you look at it on a per person consumption basis, which country eats the most ice cream?

The answer is: New Zealand. The Kiwis love their ice cream — on average each person there eats 28.4 liters, or about 7.5 gallons, of the cold stuff every year. They also have strict quality guidelines in place for dairy products, so their ice cream is really good. Maybe that’s why they eat so much of it.Source
