It’s hard to forget a name like Engelbert Humperdinck. Not exactly a name that just rolls off the tongue, it nonetheless sticks in your mind.
And it’s befitting of the singer who took that moniker and entertained generations of fans. Born in India and raised mostly in England, Humperdinck started making hits in the ‘60s, added a few more in the ‘70s, and even appeared on the soundtrack for Beavis and Butthead Do America in the ‘90s.
Humperdink, whose birthname is Arnold George Dorsey, struggled at first. His musical talent was clear, but he struggled to break through. That is, until a friend and manager told him he ought to take up the name Engelbert Humperdinck. Seems oddly specific.
