What year was the first VCR made?

It's difficult to impart upon the youth of today how revolutionary it was when you could watch and record movies, TV shows, whatever, AT HOME. Hell, I didn't even fully grasp it. I really only ever knew a world where I could even set the VCR to record at a pre-planned date and time. Incredible.

The videocassette recorder was once the most dominant form of home entertainment, and enjoyed a shocking amount of longevity, with the final models produced as late as 2016.

Whether you had top-loading, needed a standalone rewinder, or had one of those TV/VCR combos, the VCR was inescapable for a generation. But when did the very first one get made?
