
Marvel has had quite the whirlwind history. It burst onto the scene and helped to usher in the Silver Age of comics with a litany of iconic characters, almost went bankrupt, and re-emerged as one of the most successful franchises in film history.
Of course, pretty much everyone at Marvel has Stan Lee to thank, who revolutionized the industry by targeting adult audiences instead of just kids. The synergy between him and Jack Kirby may never be reproduced.

The answer is: Timely Publications. While the company founded by Martin Goodman in 1939 was originally called Timely Publications, their first publication was Marvel Comics #1. By 1961 they began publishing under that definitely better name.Source
