As a kid, there was a certain mystique to R-rated movies. I didn’t know exactly what forbidden fruits they held, I just knew I was’t supposed to see them, which only made them that much more interesting.
Of course, most of the time it was just some swear words or maybe a naked rear end, so when I finally did see an R-rated movie it turned out to not be that exciting.
But that aura sticks with me, and even as a full-fledged adult I get a little tinge of excitement mixed with fear when I realize I’m about to watch something that’s been rated by the Motion Picture Association with that capital R.
Maybe I’m not the only one who gets drawn in by such a simple designation, considering there are some R-rated films out there that have brought in some serious cash. Which one has made the most at the box office, without adjusting for inflation?

The answer is: Joker. 2019’s Joker made over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, beating out even the juggernaut of Oppenheimer for the title of highest-grossing R-rated movie ever.Adjusted for inflation, The Exorcist would give Arthur Fleck a run for his money. And yes, any of these movies would have terrified me as a child. Except T2, that movie rules.Source
