The answer is: Pac-Man
"Pac-Man," aka Puck Man, made its debut back in 1980 and introduced the world to the little yellow wedge. The game was a revolution for its time, tasking players with navigating mazes while being chased by four colorful ghosts. This simple idea would eventually result in over 400,000 in sales, making it the best-selling arcade game of all time. That's a lot of quarters.
"Pac-Man" was created by Toru Iwatani and a team of nine other developers who were aiming to create a game that would appeal to a female audience. At the time, arcade games almost exclusively targeted young men, leaving half of the market up for grabs. The bright colors and cute characters made it a smash hit as soon as it hit the arcades.
Calling "Pac-Man" a phenomenon would be an understatement. The game spawned plenty of sequels and spin-offs, including "Mrs. Pac-Man" (which has its own place in arcade sales history), but also expanded into other media with a TV show and even a hit single called "Pac-Man Fever." While "Pac-Man" isn't the powerhouse it used to be, it will live on in the history books as one of the most important and certainly one of the most profitable arcade classics of all time.
