Westerns have been an indelible part of film since at least The Great Train Robbery hit screens back in 1903. It's a genre that feels uniquely American (yes, even the Italian ones) yet can serve as a backdrop to tell almost any kind of story.
Maybe that's why the genre seems timeless yet is constantly being reinvented. In the canon of great Western movies, there are dozens that have become hugely successful and influential.
But that doesn't always equate to success at the Oscars. Sort of like science fiction, it seems all too often this iconic film genre doesn't get its full due. How many Westerns have won Oscars for Best Picture?
