The answer is: So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
Joan Jett caught The Arrows performing their original song "I Love Rock 'n Roll" on a forgotten British TV show in 1976, and something in those chords wouldn't let go. When 23 record labels slammed their doors, she took the song and kicked them back open.
Her version stripped away The Arrows' glam-rock polish and replaced it with a leather-jacket attitude. The Blackhearts added raw power chords, and suddenly America had its new rock anthem. Seven weeks at Billboard's #1 spot. Ten million albums worldwide. A generation of teenagers wearing out their local jukeboxes.
The irony? By 1982, most jukeboxes had already switched to quarters. But "put another quarter in" doesn't quite have the same ring to it. The song's success launched Jett from punk rock clubs to stadium stages. MTV put the video in heavy rotation, making her jet-black hair and rhythm guitar the symbols of rock rebellion.
Four decades later, the jukeboxes are gone, but Jett's call to action still hits. Guitar Hero introduced it to kids who'd never seen a dime slot. Each new generation finds its way to those power chords, proving this wasn't just another rock song - it was a blueprint for how to make the walls shake.
Next time you hear those opening power chords, remember: somewhere, someone is reaching for imaginary coins, ready to keep the jukebox playing all night long.
