"The Family" sketches featuring Vicki Lawrence as Mama Harper became the hit spin-off series "Mama's Family," running from 1983 to 1990. The cranky Southern matriarch originally appeared as Carol Burnett's mother in the recurring sketches, but Lawrence, who was only in her 30s when playing the elderly Mama, stole the show so completely that NBC picked up the character for a whole new series. The show ran for six seasons and Lawrence still occasionally appears in character as Mama at live events.
