December 8 in Nerd History

Here are five things that happened on December 8th for those of us who are still waiting for those X-ray glasses to show up in the mail.

I.

Birthdays of honor: Jim Morrison (1943), Kim Basinger (1953), Samuel Davis Jr. (1925), David Carradine (1936), Teri Hatcher (1964), Gregg Allman (1947), Flip Wilson (1933).

II.

Today in 1980, the unthinkable happened when former Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed in New York City at just 40 years old.

Lennon had signed an autograph for Mark David Chapman earlier in the day, but when Lennon returned that night, Chapman shot him three times at close range. He had grown incensed at Lennon’s lifestyle and comments — although later biographies would come to conclude that Chapman had a larger list of potential targets, all of them famous, and Lennon just happened to be the one he was able to get close to.

A portion of Central Park in front of the building where the shooting happened became a memorial known as Strawberry Fields.

Imagine all the people, living life in peace.​

III.

Today in 1984, the iconic Captain Kangaroo aired its final episode, after delighting generations of kids for nearly 30 years.

Over 29 seasons, Bob Keeshan and co. produced 6,090 episodes. Sheesh!

The format was generally pretty loose, featuring everything from cartoons to reading segments to guest stars. Keeshan conceived the idea as building the same warmth towards kids as a grandparent might. The “kangaroo” part came from the oversized pockets on the Captain’s jacket.

IV.

There’s an argument to be made that the ’70s featured the most depressing movies of any decade. Case in point, The Deer Hunter, released today in 1978. The poster literally has an image of a dude pointing a gun at his head, people!

The tale of three men whose lives are upended by the Vietnam War is widely regarded as one of the best movies ever made. Starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage, it was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won five. If you are a masochist, maybe queue it up right before or after Deliverance. Yeesh.

V.

60 years ago today, in 1963, the top song in the country was “Dominique” by The Singing Nun.
